OBJECTIVES

Improvement of the Radiation Field Assembly Components system

I. Specific Objectives - INOE 2000

 Design of a LiH neutron attenuator

II. Results:

-          LiH Safety – Some Issues

• hazardous material.

• reacts violently with water, including water vapors.

• handling of prefabricated LiH needs gloves and dust masks.

• bare LiH can be pumped down to vacuum; it is best to repressurize with dry N2, Ar.

• LiH cannot be in direct contact with Al.

-          Attenuator /container boxes manufacturing

-          LiH encapsulation into the Attenuator Boxes

-          Attenuator boxes periodical leak testing

-          Leak detection of sealed off devices pressurized with mixtures of helium and nitrogen

Commercially available LiH powder in processed into solid disks by USA compacting and hot pressing;

-        AB manufactured in UHV technology;

-        LiH disks encapsulation in a specialized system;

-        AB stored and transported in STC with periodical He leak testing;
